Speech and Language Therapy (SLT).
SLT is a mainstream therapy used to assess and treat speech, language, communication and feeding problems.
How does it work?
SLT can help with difficulties in understanding or expressing language and with feeding problems to do with the swallow mechanism or structure of the mouth and throat. The therapist may help with oral motor skills, with early language and understanding or with augmentative communication systems such as Makaton or PECs.
What are the benefits?
Any improvement in understanding and communication will help support the child’s self-esteem, emotional well-being and behaviour. As well as working on communication, SLT’s may also address oral motor skills to help improve muscle tone, feeding and sound formation. SLT can also help children to understand the social world around them. SLTs make therapy fun for the child using games and play techniques and can give ongoing advice to parents and carers on games and exercises to practice at home.
